Beak trimming in laying birds

Beak trimming, or also known as beak trimming in laying hens, is one of the practices used today that benefits bird productivity and better animal welfare, mainly for these three important reasons:

  • Avoid cannibalism or feather pecking in birds.
  • Prevent birds from wasting food and maximize consumption.
  • Prevents hens from breaking the Egg at the time of laying.

It is advisable to perform beak trimming during the first weeks of life to avoid as little weight loss as possible, in addition to the fact that during this time the healing process is greater than that of a bird that ends its development.

Currently there are 2 systems to perform beak removal, the classic one that is done with a hot blade and on the other hand it is done by infrared rays, however, the principle to do it is the same

  • Leave at least 2 mm long up to the nostrils
  • Beak trimming is performed only on healthy animals
  • Leave the peaks as equal as possible

classic detachment.

  • The first beak is done from 8 to 12 days.
  • The second beak of 4 weeks. It is important to emphasize that it is not good to beak birds when they are close to sexual maturity because it causes a delay in laying. Birds should not be trimmed in the post-vaccination period.

Recommendations for a good beak

• Trim only healthy birds.
• Perform handling with patience and well done.
• Constantly check the temperature of the leaves.
• Change blades every 4,000 to 5,000 birds.
• Evaluate the beak cut and length with the vernier.
• Constantly supervise driving.
• Apply vitamins, electrolytes and products to stimulate food consumption.

Advantages of using vitamins

SOLUTION 1: NUTRI-MEN K3

It is a compound based on Menadione, the active ingredient of vitamin K3 with high availability for handling processes in birds such as pullet beaking or in cases of capillary fragility. Nutri-Men K3 with its active ingredient Menadione is a cofactor in the synthesis of blood coagulation factors.

Vitamin K3 (Menadione) is a water-soluble product. It is recommended to use it for 2 days before and 2 days after beak removal.

SOLUTION 2: NUTRI GAIN

It promotes the reduction of stress in birds, in addition to its powerful antioxidant and immunostimulating effect, which is very important, since beak trimming is a very stressful handling that can cause immunosuppression.
